For the owner who wishes to head of potentiel housetraining problems, and for breeders who want to facilitate the owner's work, here are few suggestions.

Dogs have the tendency to avoid making a mess where they sleep. You need to remember that it is only a tendency and must be reinforced in order to become a habit. Confining the pup to a place where it is unlikely to eliminate and offering lots of potty breaks and treats for the right behavior can speed up the process.

Do not punish the accident but give treats for correct elimination.

Take the pup outside under any weather. Teach the pup to walk through water-soaked grass, under the rain, under the snow, etc.... One of the hardest things to overcome is a dog that doesn't like to get its toes wet. This can cause the dog to seek drier place to eliminate, such as your carpet. This aspect is very important in a country like ours where the weather is not always nice...

Take the puppy out for frequent potty breaks at the right times. Puppies will usually eliminate right after they sleep, eat and play. Also, watcth for the pre-elimination behavior, such as sniffing, circling and squatting.

How can we ask a young puppy to refrain from going potty .....if we let him freely drink water. It is recommanded to let the puppy drink water during meal times and if you are at home during the day, but you must avoid any water after supper time if you want him to learn to refrain from going potty.
